  1. why do zen teachers feel compelled to find an heir but great writers like Charles Bukowski don't ?

    1. well the writing is the heir !

wang wei, li po and tu fu left their poems, but they were literate

i think a characteristic of tang and sung dynasty zen is the lack of literacy by most zen masters, you needed heirs or followers to have your pearls passed on, joshu i think was illiterate !

plus there's always a lot of manual labour in zen to keep the monasteries and hermitages going, any man over age 40 running such a place needs young labour !

in addition celibacy places a different perspective, charles bukowski had a daughter for instance !

toni packer who wasn't keen on the idea of "heirs" eventually caved in and gave permission to teach to some students of hers, i think this was to keep the springwater center running and care for herself as she got older

i think really its a circumstances thing

a lot to do with the direction your life takes . .

    2. thanks really interesting, couldn't come up with a reason myself

I started asking myself when I was reading hakuin who was putting an emphasis on having an heir, he had lots of students later on to keep up the temple and he was able to write, so maybe for him at that time it was just an embedded zen tradition

  2. I've been looking at a lot of Maxfield Parrish's artwork, and I love the way he uses brilliant hues that're contrasted with their complementary color, sometimes on the same object, in order to intensify the color in order to give off a magical realist feel. What are your particular favorite pieces by him? I also bought some of the children stories he illustrated for inspiration and study.

    1. 'june skies' is one i quite like, you have to “ mode ” into it to appreciate it !

the ones that really did well for him had people or a single person/child in !

    2. What other artists do you also consider to have a nice magical realist touch? What's your opinion on James Gurney?

    3. james gurney is like david wiesner and jim lamarche, sorta half there but locked into a failing meme, unfeathered dinosaurs in his case !

obviously chris van allsburg is an outstandingly successful magical realist child's artist

i think when you do something like that it has to carry you and you believe in it . .

    6. I watched the video of The Garden of Abdul Gasazi and checked out The Wreck of the Zephyr from the library and read it. I have a bunch of his other stuff from the library to read also.

Chris Van Allsman is very good.

I think you'd like Jim LaMarche's The Raft more because it's a bit more magical realist and about writing (or drawing) based off one's experiences in solitude within natural scenery. I don't think The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye is his best because he didn't write it. The Raft is far better, and I recommend checking it out.

I suppose I agree with you on David Wiesner. He is a bit overrated.

  3. Could you elaborate on what you mean regarding parallelism being true versus the singularity at the big bang? You once said the Universe is Infinite parallelism, and I would appreciate it if you elaborate more in layman's terms. I can kind of see what you are pointing to in a mystical sense, but I actually feel I have more work before I can understand the full extent of what you're conveying.

    2. hereʼs only parallelism as processes, so we are concerned with identity with infinity but there are only parallel processes existant !

there are also parallel processes in identity with infinity, both completely convergent to meaninglessness and in a state of flux !

singularity is basically a convergence to meaninglessness but reality and physical reality is parallelism and flux

      ----------------------

in terms of parallelism the big bang is now thought to to be a condensed point of a transition between two universes rather than itself being an existant origin from meaninglessness

this condensed point is highly ambiguous being both an excursion close to meaninglessness and rather robust parallelism forced to mutual close proximity

its really the old zen koan, theoretically the point of a needle may not pass, but in practice a horse and coach passes through

my view and experience is that the whole thing is much more benign, in theory there is no needle point, just effective carriage combinations if you see what i mean
a safe is opened by whatever combination opens it, the opening itself is the prior conditioning . .

    1. Dude can't renew it forever.

Seems like he's on the verge.

I seen my great uncle being wheel bound for decades and after a few months after being diagnosed he was bed bound.

I don't know Andrew's situation but use your discretion.

It's up to us to save his pages if we want.
