this blog is the continuation of a genuine mystical tradition, unless you get in daily contemplative time and abstain to a significant degree from "entertainment" then you are just wasting your time and mine !
with the internet you can visit things over and over again, I. real life that's not possible unless someone is recording it, but I think there is something more in real time exchanges even with written messages on say Reddit it's better to read the messages as they're happening than to come back to them later on
the odd thing about my time with toni packer who was important for me was that i was not experienced enough to talk to her about things it would have been useful to have a conversation about, the life issues of spending time on contemplative inquiry, and though it was to my advantage to be able to stay in what was really her creation, "the springwater center" i didn't feel she had made a right life choice for herself getting so involved in it and putting her remaining life so completely in it !
if you look at well known people who have made "contemplative inquiry" their life's work, nietzsche, dogen hakuin even the possibly executed bodhidharma and certainly assassinated huike, schopenhauer, van gogh, keats, dylan thomas, charles bukowski, there's a long list, the vast majority has made bad messes of their lives and like myself, taken every wrong turning in the book . .
those with reasonably sane lives are very few, jacques derrida would be one for instance, wang wei another . .
"enlightenment" seems to be the result of giving coherence and meaning to an unsuccessful life, that is life itself is unsuccessful and you can't see this without being a wreck and wrecked !
what do you think are positive aspects of studying zen face to face irl with a teacher ?
ReplyDeleteyou've said virility is a big problem that is avoided through the internet
