email to herb deer: I get a spammer rejection when I tried to reply to a post, I don't know whether that's intentional or not, but I always duplicate my replies/posts on my web page, so the reply is here

  1. I am going to learn scuba diving soon, and I plan to try it this Summer:

    Scuba diving into kensho
    Scuba diving into infinity
The quasi-border between the shore and water
    The womb that encases both

Btw, check out this manga. It seems just as profound and deep as Hi no Tori (Phoenix). I seriously recommend checking out Phoenix Volume 2: Future and Volume 4: Karma, and possibly taking a look at this manga:

They're like poetry. Kind of like how the film Stalker is like poetry.

    1. i dived for years sailing around the northern east coast of new zealand and i can safely say not one of those thoughts you listed ever occured to me !

if they had, i would have given it up they sound so disfunctionally dangerous !

look, manga is limited, perhaps there is great manga to be created like stalker but i doubt it , the medium is too limited !

james thurber is way better than any manga i have seen !

you seemed plagued by unreality problems, scuba diving is potentially dangerous and needs focus, like always be well on the safe side of your residual nitrogen time/dive tables..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nitrogen bubbles in the brain are a worry................ never be tempted to "bend"/stretch you allowable time underwater !

water skills and confidence underwater are important !

  2. I am going to take classes for it, so I will be well-prepared. One needs to get licensed to do it afterall. I'm pretty smart, so I can learn about the stuff you referenced:

    http://scuba.about.com/od/Theory/p/Residual-Nitrogen-Time-Rnt-And-Scuba-Diving.htm

You should check out Sandman by Neil Gaiman (a Western comic that references a lot of cool mythology) and Tezuka's Phoenix. I think sequential art is unlimited, just as much as poetry.

  3. yeah look, are you so smart? emotional intelligence is perhaps more important in a life sense than intellectual , you are just tangenting at some of the things i am saying and so as aconsequence going around and around in circles !

you are stuck in entertainment, what zen and poetry is really about is a serious business, it's hard enough to approach it in our limited lifetimes, if you are going to fritter your time away on entertainment like gaiman and manga............... well that's your business, but please don't waste my time on your bad choice /s !!!!

btw i should mention that i eventually gave up scuba diving out of a concern for micro nitrogen bubbles forming within the allowed dive table times which research shows, it seemed embolic to me tho i cannot be sure............ but i did make a concious decision and stopped................. i do think that high hour recreational divers are affected and the issue becomes more significant as one gets past say 32 when all the usual health resiliences of youth start to pass away.........

it's really fundamental with your generation so deeply mired in entertainment that you have to walk away from what is all attention loss and get into the real quality..............

the difference between james thurber, emily dickinson, ibn al-'arabi compared to the endless profusion of video, cartoon and writing swill around today !

sequential art is unlimited but so is life and that is not helpful in terms of what zen and poetry is about, there is some sort of end that can be partaken of.................

the real communion of infinity and it requires estrangement from the masses and their stupidity, not the endless imbibement of populist crap and then to add insult to injury is claimed to be the real thing which is what you are doing !

entertainment versus quality semantic/spiritual seeking, your choice and to date you are too much on the entertainment road !

  4. How does one get into real quality?

Also, you said, "Sequential art is unlimited but so is life and that is not helpful in terms of what zen and poetry is about". What do you mean? That part confuses me.

  5. well those 4 lines making a sort of poem on scuba diving, those are your own thoughts and real, you can see what you think, so in that sense it's the way to go and "quality"

rather than manga you might look at a Jacques derrida video or figure out some poems?

basically you are eliminating junk, voynich and the fruitless and that is itself is a "quality process" and from my own experience is pretty much alifetime task

there's plenty to do and get some real solitude in as well...............

I rarely have opinions on the suitability of material and am guided by practical consequences ...............

what I mean is that life lived and understood conventionally is multitudinous, unending and nonsensical so if you want to get out of that you have to start looking (and working!) away from conventional approaches to life like entertainment for relaxation and mutate/shape the way one thinks more in alignment with what the great minds of the past have worked out like wang wei, han shan, Emily dickinson, schopenhauer, derrida

see this is where all the modern spiritual stuff goes wrong, (including zen!) is they look to currently alive mediocrities for guidance, but in fact this matter is so difficult and poorly understood you only have a limited number of people over the whole of history who understand it properly !

those people you have to go to for understanding , otherwise you get bogged down in the usual infinity morass of a mist covered and totally opaque life ! :o()

    1. Yeah, I watched the Derrida and Zizek videos and read some poetry here and there. I've watched Zizek's Perverted Guide to Cinema, and his videos explicating Lacanian theory. You should check out some Borges because I think you'd like him a lot. Well, I like reading stuff like J. Krishnamurti, Toni Packer, Han Shan, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, neuroscience journal articles, and etc., but I feel like you're jumping to conclusions about sequential art and video games as mediums. Not all of them are entertaining without any literary merit. Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix, Black Jack, and Buddha are pretty deep, and Neil Gaiman's Sandman is pretty well-written. I also liked Transmetropolitan and the main character was inspired by Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, and Bill Hicks. Check out Transmetroploitan too!

Also, check out the video games Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, and the original Deus Ex. They all have good narratives and themes that encompass a lot of important points in life... especially Deus Ex.

There is no doubt... I guess I am a part of my cultural time period. There is a lot of bullshit in this day and age, but there are a lot of secret gems too. I just finished watching the TV Series Mushi-shi and Kemono no Souja, and those are pretty sophisticated anime.

I've read some of Kant and Schopenhauer here and there. Julius Bahnsen, who was inspired by him, is MUCH MUCH better. Problem is,, you have to know German to read Bahnsen, since he was never really translated.

I prefer just picking out the themes of the artwork I immerse myself into, and then doing whatever I want to those themes.

  6. you are being completely opaque to what I am saying, since you feel you are so right and it is really in opposition to what I am saying, then perhaps another board with more like minded people may suit you , and actually the net is full of hubric intellectual nonentities like your self confusing media entertainment for real working and thinking so have fun.................

you are not banned but not really welcome to post with your present attitude............

I don't ask for agreement, but I do get sick of vapor presented as real :o(

in the end if you are so sure you are right why would you be here?

we do not agree and in terms of what i post about you are at the very beginning stages and yet will not listen in an investigative way to what is being discussed !

    1. I'm not sure about anything, but I ultimately guess it's what you get out of the art that matters?

Quality studying is important, but one "shouldn't" attach too much seriousness to abstract reasoning. There are always ulterior motives to the construction of such things... especially in the empirical sciences where conflict of interests always exists... Michel Foucault got into this kind of stuff. I can discuss my own views in this regard...

I mean, I've spent a lot of time reading up on Schopenhauer, Bahnsen, and other Western Philosophy. I've also read a lot of good fiction.

We just have differing opinions on what constitutes good meaningful artwork that encourages deep, thoughtful introspection and an inquiring mind. You basically feel certain mediums of art are too limited in conveying reality-as-it-is, but I feel those certain mediums are not constrained as you make them out to be.

While quality studying is good, I think quality observance of one's own mind is true studying, and the capacity to let go of our attachments, alongside the subsequent pain. without succumbing to despair or false hope. But then again I don't know anything... but I would be lying to myself if I said all sequential art, all video games, or all film did not have meaningful themes to convey.

You do realize that stuff you said regarding the fractal of the real and unreal was expressed Hi no Tori (Phoenix) by Tezuka? I know that seems an unlikely place to see such a theme explored... but there you go.

      Delete
    2. you make all sorts of claims with no evidence, like for instance what I said about the fractal of the real and unreal was not said by trezuka !

prove what you say with evidence !

you have this chronic problem of just flicking over stuff and think you understand without the real work it takes !

    3. I have to go scan that specific part. Read volume 2 of Phoenix. It explicatly shows it at the end.

The whole narrative is modeled in a kind of recursive way.

  7. James Thurber sounds pretty cool though. He seems very witty, and I may check out his book "Is Sex Necessary?"

    Thanks for that recommendation.

You should check out Tezuka's Phoenix vol. 2 and 4 though.

    1. I have checked tezuka out, its just sexualized rubbish and you have the same problem as brad warner with immersion is a stupid fantasy world !

    2. Do you really think I'm that stupid? In another discussion you called me open-minded, and now you cal me stupid due to a difference in opinion of one artist's capabilities?

Also, there are no sexualized stuff in Phoenix vol. 2 or 4. I don't get where you get that impression of Tezuka's artwork.

      You're the one who's being close-minded here.

    3. sexualized means an intense male female paradigm, not necessarily soft pornography at all ! you are caught in at it at a substitutive level and perhaps that is the real problem !

    2. "I have to go scan that specific part. Read volume 2 of Phoenix. It explicitly shows it at the end.

The whole narrative is modeled in a kind of recursive way. "

the problem with you is I have to do all the work, like I can find something that is sorta in the area you are talking about like ozuna playing his song for the phoenix which is towards the bottom of his page

      http://madinkbeard.com/archives/phoenix-volume-3-yamato

but its poisonous voynich, the japanese have a really screwed up culture, intelligent but human mad, all you are telling me is you are poisoned and don't want to leave it !

      Delete
    3. Woah, woah! I agree volume 3 wasn't that sophisticated. Tezuka had his ups and downs. When I get my scanner, I'll scan the portions of Volume 2 I'm talking about to you.

Also, Volume 4: Karma was a masterpiece. It's definitely not sexualized, and I did give you a scene from it once.

But yeah, I don't want disagreement to come between us. I still read your poetry and think your recommendations, advice, and etc. are very valuable. I'm just saying not ALL video games or sequential art are mindless entertainment.

      For example, check this out:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b-bijO3uEw

That is definitely not like trash like GTA or other mainstream crap!

I definitely value deep artwork that encourages philosophical speculation and has depth.

"Morpheus: The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.
JC Denton: Electronic surveillance hardly inspires reverence. Perhaps fear and obedience, but not reverence.
Morpheus:God and the gods were apparitions of observation, judgement and punishment. Other sentiments towards them were secondary.
JC Denton: No one will ever worship a software entity peering at them through a camera.
Morpheus: The human organism always worships. First, it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgement of others), next it will be self-aware systems you have built to realize truly omnipresent observation and judgment.
JC Denton: You underestimate humankind's love of freedom.
Morpheus: The individual desires judgment. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilization"
